Protection from retaliation

It's illegal for your landlord to punish you for complaining about conditions or standing up for your rights.

You have the right to

  • Complain to the City, 311, police, the media, a community group, a tenant union, or your landlord.
  • Testify in court or at a hearing.
  • Use any right or remedy the law gives you.

Your landlord may not respond by

  • Ending or threatening to end your tenancy.
  • Raising your rent or cutting services.
  • Filing or threatening an eviction.
  • Refusing to renew your lease.

Tip: Log your complaints in the app. A dated record of when you complained helps show retaliation if it happens.
