Rent increases and non-renewals

Under the Fair Notice Ordinance, your landlord must warn you ahead of time before raising rent or ending your lease.

How much notice you get

  • Lived there less than 6 months: 30 days.
  • Lived there 6 months to 3 years: 60 days.
  • Lived there more than 3 years: 120 days.
  • If your landlord gives less notice than required, you can stay for the full notice period.

If you get an eviction notice for unpaid rent

  • Your landlord must give you 5 days' written notice.
  • You have a one-time right to stop the case by paying all back rent plus the court filing fees your landlord paid, any time before a judge issues an eviction order.
  • If your landlord accepts your late rent, they can't evict you for that missed payment.
